How You Speak to Yourself Matters!
We have conversations with ourselves daily, and the way we speak to ourselves deeply impacts how we feel, how we act, and how motivated we stay in our fitness journey. There’s an undercurrent of negative cliches that has been swirling around the fitness world for years, and it’s time to break free from that cycle. Your inner dialogue shapes your mindset, and when it comes to fitness, that mindset is everything.
Let’s start with one common phrase we’ve all heard: “Cheat meal.” It sounds harmless, right? But think about it – when you say “cheat,” you’re labeling yourself as a cheater. No one likes to be a cheater. That term sets you up for guilt and shame, as though you’ve betrayed yourself. Instead, let’s shift the narrative: call it a “treat meal.” You’ve been consistent, disciplined, and working hard, so why not view it as a reward? Treat meals are a part of life; they bring balance. Every rule has exceptions, and being too rigid leads to burnout. When you approach your nutrition with flexibility, you’ll avoid the risk of turning a “cheat meal” into a cheat day, or worse, a cheat week that derails your progress. Treat yourself with grace – literally.
Another phrase that needs a rethink is “Stop making excuses.” It’s so common in fitness to hear this pushy, aggressive language. But what if instead of focusing on “stopping” something negative, we focused on starting something positive? Excuses are often our mind’s way of grappling with real or perceived obstacles. Rather than shutting that down, let’s acknowledge the barriers we face. The better mindset is to work with those challenges, make a plan, and push forward. The words we use should empower us, not beat us down. No more self-sabotaging. You don’t need to stop making excuses – you can start finding solutions.
And finally, let’s talk about the phrase, “I have to work out.” This one really misses the mark. Working out shouldn’t feel like a burden – it’s an opportunity. Reframe it: “I get to work out.” This is your time for self-care, for investing in yourself. You’re not just working out; you’re actively building a healthier, stronger version of you. Taking care of your body is a privilege. If working out doesn’t feel like a passion yet, give it time – it can become a source of pride, joy, and fulfillment, a reward in itself.
Be mindful of your inner dialogue. Be kind to yourself – because you are always listening.
